From school supplies and meal applications to after-school programs and neighborhood school assignments, there's quite a bit to check off the list — especially if you've just moved to Irvine.
Today I've gathered everything you need to know about preparing for the 2026-27 IUSD school year in one place. We'll walk through the academic calendar, a pre-school checklist, school assignments by neighborhood, and how the IUSD school district actually affects real estate prices.
The 2026-27 IUSD academic calendar is divided into two tracks depending on school type.
Traditional-calendar schools start on Tuesday, August 18. Year-round schools, on the other hand, already began on Monday, July 20. The four year-round elementary/K-8 schools are Plaza Vista, Vista Verde, Westpark, and Woodbury — all other schools follow the traditional calendar.
It's a good idea to mark the key breaks on your calendar now. Winter break runs from Monday, December 21 through Friday, January 1 and applies to both traditional and year-round schools. Spring break is Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2, and the last day of school is Friday, June 4. Thanksgiving break covers five days (November 23–27), and federal holidays such as Labor Day (9/7) and Veterans Day (11/11) are also marked as non-school days.

Here are the items that are easiest to overlook before school starts, in order of priority.
First: ParentVue Data Confirmation. Log in at my.iusd.org to verify your child's information and home address. This must be completed every school year — even returning families. Skipping it can cause delays in receiving school communications and documents.
Second: School Supply Lists. Supply lists vary by school, so check your school's website or visit iusd.org/2026SupplyLists. Middle and high school teachers typically distribute their own supply lists through course syllabi after the first day.
Third: Free School Meals. Under the California Universal Meals Program, all IUSD students receive one free breakfast and one free lunch per school day, regardless of household income. Additionally, applying for the free or reduced-price meal program unlocks extra benefits such as AP exam fee waivers and college application fee reductions.
Fourth: School Bus Service. Not every school offers bus service, so check first by emailing Transportation@iusd.org or calling (949) 936-5370. Note that students enrolled through the School of Choice program are not eligible for bus service.
Fifth: ELOP After-School Program. The Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) is offered completely free at all 29 IUSD elementary and K-8 schools for low-income students, English Learners (EL), Foster Youth, and homeless students. It guarantees a minimum of 9 hours of learning per day and operates for at least 30 days during school breaks.

The median home price in Irvine currently sits at approximately $1.57M–$1.65M, which represents a 20–30% premium over neighboring cities like Tustin. Even within Irvine, a single school boundary line can make a meaningful difference in price — IUSD school assignments are a real, quantifiable factor in home valuations.
